The impact of Covid

There are 797,000 young people in the UK who are not in education, employment or training. This comes as a result of the highest quarterly increase in this figure since 2011, following the financial crisis.

When you disaggregate this data, Black youth and young adults are particularly disadvantaged. For instance, they are now 3 times more likely to be unemployed than their White peers.

The Rapid Recovery Challenge

Nesta’s Rapid Recovery Challenge event series is designed to ensure that we are all empowered to access the key tools that will help us succeed post-pandemic. The goal is to work together to reach 100,000 Black people in the UK from June-September.

Do it Now Now is working with community partners, influencers, and leading organisations within the Black community to upskill and empower Black people while sharing information about what resources are available to them. The focus is on 3 core areas which DINN have identified as most under resourced for the Black community:

● Employment Skills;

● Financial Skills;

● Skills for Young People.

As a community partner, Elimu will be hosting 3 Launchpad sessions throughout June to mark the opening of our Launchpad competition.

The Launchpad competition

First (£200) and Second (£100) place prizes will be awarded for the best business pitch, detailing:

· What your business or idea is

· What your mission is

· What the gap in the market is

· Who your customer is

· Estimated startup costs

· Where you see your business in 3 years

We are hosting 3 business and finance sessions to mark the opening of the Launchpad competition.

You can register to attend the free sessions, where our guest speakers will cover the following business topics:

1. Managing your finances — 15th June

Learn about the daily habits which you can develop to save money, even when it is limited. Once you have gained insight to these techniques, you will hear about the different ways that you can generate wealth, with an introduction to assets.

2. Setting up and running a business — 22nd June

Learn how to get started with a business and take it from strength to strength. You will hear about the experiences and lessons learned from two entrepreneurs who have businesses in the tech and consumer product industries.

3. Promoting and selling your (personal or business) brand — 29th June

Learn how to market your business online, with tips for your website landing page, using data insights to engage your audience and developing a marketing strategy in your business plan. There will be plenty of time to ask questions about your personal or business brand, so come prepared to get the most out of these marketing experts.

About Elimu

Elimu provides underrepresented youth and young adults with a community of role models who enhance their education, careers and financial literacy.

Our community achieves this by providing mentoring, training and interactive events. These are opportunities for our Young Visionaries (YV’s) to interact and learn from role models who they identify with.

Our Launchpad and Fellowship programmes are specially designed to provide our beneficiaries with the skills, experience and networks to develop their personal, entrepreneurial and financial skills. We are excited to have been recruited by DINN to adapt our Launchpad as a community partner for the Rapid Recovery Festival. This gives us an opportunity to upskill and support more beneficiaries through the economic impact of the pandemic, which continues to disproportionately affect our most disadvantaged youth.

Want to take part? Find out more about the Rapid Recovery Festival here and share with anyone who will benefit from our sessions and cash prizes!
